If you’ve driven down Packer Avenue on the backside of the fairgrounds recently you’ve probably thought to yourself, “What are they doing?” You have a valid point because we have a lot going on. So, what are we doing? With the new demolition derby promoter we are working with, the need to have more space and improve our “pit” parking has been brought to the top of our “to-do” list. To make this happen, we had to remove all the trees, clean up all the junk that was tossed in the fenceline over the years, strip the topsoil, and regrade about 6 acres of that area. This space was completely unusable because of how unlevel it was from the old racetrack berms that we no longer use. So why do we need more space?
Over the past few years, we’ve averaged around 30 vehicles in our demo derby, this year working with our new local promoter, Uttecht Derby Industries, we are anticipating around 100 vehicles in the derby. You read that right, we are planning and setting the stage for one of the biggest demolition derbies in the area and possibly the state. With an event with this many participants, we need to have more space for parking, more space to work on cars between heats, and last, but not least, more spectator seating! We have secured safer, easier to get around in, and larger bleachers for this year’s fair in anticipation that we will want to seat around 2500 spectators for this show.

The Portage County Fair of Amherst is excited to share progress on our new
entertainment building, which will be named the Wysocki Family Farms
Entertainment Building. The exterior of the building is now complete, and we are
making steady progress finishing the interior. This new facility will house our fair office, a
walk-in cooler, a stage, and dressing rooms behind the stage where performers and
groups can prepare before going on stage. This project would not be possible without
the support of our generous sponsors. We are extremely grateful for their commitment
to our fair and our community. We will continue accepting donations for
the Entertainment Building Fund Campaign through the end of April, when we
typically begin our annual fund campaign. Anyone interested in contributing can scan
the QR code included with this announcement or reach out to Mike Sankey
at msankey@amherstfair.com for more information.
The 2026 Portage County Fair of Amherst will be held July 16–19 at the Amherst
Fairgrounds. The fair board has been working hard to make the 2026 fair a success,
and this building project is just one of the many improvements we are making as we
continue to build on the record-breaking attendance we experienced last year.
